The Warriors of the Stone
Darus is a Mul, hated for most of his life for being only half-dwarf. He found out he was the son of great warriors, who were now royalty. Instead of basking in a new lavish lifestyle, he strikes out for glory to earn his place in his family.
Two towns were founded in a small grassland surrounded by mountains. Dawn’s Break is a town, primarily of human origin, that lies on the west part of this grassland. The city was founded by a group of mages that sought seclusion to work on infusing magic with runes; which also is their primary safeguard. To the east lies the ColdIron Mountain, in which the ColdIron Dwarves make their residence. The mountain contains precious gems and metals, which the dwarves use to line their halls, but mainly they export some of the rarest weapons in the world.
The Bloodfury is a band of orcs, who also lay claim to the land, although they were not the first residents. The area is easily protected and rich in resources, so the orcs seek to claim the land for themselves. The first town attacked is Dawn’s Break, where the mages are unable to protect themselves from being ransacked. The town would be completely destroyed if it were not for Leona Firesword. She’s a traveler, hired as a temporary bodyguard for a group of mages who had traveled out for supplies. She fights the orcs back, but not before they do significant damage to the town. The residents of the town travel to ColdIron Mountain and ask for protection, the residents of ColdIron Mountain refuse, but a rift is set between the residents; some feel it would be better to ally with the nearby town.
The bloodfury then attack the ColdIron Mountain. The residents fight back valiantly and crush the assault; led by a dwarf named Fen Ironhammer. After the assault, Fen decided to lead a splinter group of dwarves to protect the valley from the orcs, meaning both towns. They traveled to Dawn’s Break, now ruled by Leona, and found willing allies. Together, Leona and Fen created the new town of Mountain’s Wall, which spanned the entire opening of the valley.
Leona and Fen soon fell in love and had a child, Darus. The town is a battlefield, however, and the child would constantly be in harms way. He was brought to a friend of Fen’s, Cogred BlackIron. Growing up, this would be Darus’s only friend. The society in ColdIron Mountain hated him both for being a halfbreed, and also for being the son of a traitor. He was never in danger, however, being the son of the dwarf who drove back the enemy years ago. He became apprenticed to Cogred and worked as a blacksmith. When he turns 17, the mountain is once again attacked by the blood fury. They had taken a group of their best soldiers over the top of one of the neighboring mountains. Due to the journey, they were not large in number. Unfortunately, the ColdIron mountain warriors had followed Fen, and there was no one left with combat ability to fight them. One of the orcs broke in to the blacksmith and struck him to the floor. As he was about to bring his sword down on Cogred, Darus appeared from the doorway and cleaved the orc in two using an axe he had been working on earlier that day. In a fit of rage after almost losing his only friend, he burst into the street and lay waste to the remainder of the Bloodfury elite. After that, the mountain regaled him as a hero. He spent another year there.
On his 18th birthday, Cogred told him about his parents, Darus had heard stories about his father; and was always proud of his ancestry, but never about what happened to his parents after they left. Darus went on a journey to find them. He first traveled to Dawn’s Break, where he learned about how his mother had come to be a hero there. He also learned that Mountain’s wall had been bringing them weapons to enchant; all of which came from ColdIron Mountain.
He then traveled to Mountain’s wall, where he was able to prove his ancestry by showing the guards a family crest that he still keeps with him at all times as a pendant. The family crest is a crossed axe and sword, surrounded by fire on one half, and fire on the other. He was brought before his parents who greeted him warmly. He lived the life of a prince for two years, but the whole time, he was in the shadow of his parents’ greatness. While he was there, he learned the secret to the success of the cities defense. The entire guard carried ColdIron weapons that were enchanted by the mages at Dawn’s Break. His parents were also clad in the finest gold armor, beset by gems and enchanted to make them almost impervious to any attack. His father’s warhammer carries the power of the sky, exploding in thunder when it comes into contact with an enemy, which erupts to those around him. His mother’s greatsword bursts into flames when she wishes it to, and leaves a trail of flames behid it. Darus’s skill with the axe paled in comparison. He decided to leave and find his own fortune, become a great warrior, and one day, he would not feel small when he stood by his parents’ side. He took his axe to Dawn’s Break before he left, and had it enchanted, but he would not use his parents’ riches to do it. If he started in their armor, it would be meaningless. He also would not take any of their riches with him, he would make it on his own. He bade farewell to his homeland and went in search of glory and greatness.
